Buying a used car is in some ways quite exciting, a car can be fun as well as practical, sadly though practical considerations have to come before fun most of the time but you will probably be able to get something you quite like unless you are on a very low budget. A used car with a bit of character and a little out of the ordinary is often good value anyway and fun. Some smaller compact cars are great value to buy and cheap to run plus they are quite fun to drive with quick response and little weight meaning they accelerate fast even with small engines. Perhaps though you need something with plenty of space be it for work, ferrying kids and everything that goes with them around or going away for family camping expeditions. For a commute into the city though small cars are good value and even easier to park. If you do need a large used car then it is worth looking to buy one with a diesel engine as this will be more fuel efficient.
How long a used car will last is a big decider of value, age is one consideration but miles wear out most components more than age does. As long as there is no rust and the interior is in good condition go on the mileage to decide how good value you are getting. The engine is the most expensive thing that can fail but most have a life of only a certain number of miles, on older cars around the 150,000 mark quite often. The brand of car will be a clue as to how long the car will last though with some makes being known for falling apart after a few years and other being known as cars made to last. More common cars are good value in terms of the availability of parts including part worn parts that may suffice and be far far cheaper than brand new parts. Don’t let the availability of credit for used cars put you off, less places offer credit on used cars than new cars but some do and may offer much better deals with lower interest rates.
If you are between buying a new car or a used car then consider how much value a new car loses on the first day it is driven, this makes it very poor value, ideally you want to buy a car that is a day old but this is unlikely you will find some used cars though that are 1, 2 years old or less and may even still have an outstanding manufacturer’s warranty on. This makes them great value and much less of a risk than older cars. Older cars are cheaper and whether they are value depends what you want. If you need a car that you can use to commute for a couple of months only then an older car may be better. If you want a car that you will use for years to come and eventually sell while it still has some value then you are better off with something nearly new.
